Tagged — Web 2.0 for Phishers?

June 6th, 2009 by Kevin A. Barnes

I received an email this evening from an old work colleague telling me she had posted photos for me on a social networking site called Tagged1. The email struck me as just a touch strange, but couldn’t place my finger on why and decided to click through and check it out.
Tagged Registration PageThe registration page on Tagged made me feel even more strange, asking for information I would normally not share, including my email account password. That request passed my comfort threshold and I quit the Tagged website. I also sent a quick email to the friend who sent me the original Tagged invitation asking her if it was legitimate. 1. I’m not linking directly to the Tagged website from my blog — as you read the rest of this post, you’ll see why. If afterward you still have an urgent desire to hand over your email contacts to Tagged, I won’t be an enabler. []

Two new blogs of note

February 28th, 2009 by Kevin A. Barnes

During the past week, a couple of promising new blogs were launched by some prominent Milwaukeans.

Meg McKenna, co-founder of the successful MilwaukeeMoms.com, has started City on the Lake. McKenna has been a resident of both Chicagoland (she grew up in the Chicago suburbs) and Greater Milwaukee, and her new blog covers regional interests that involve both cities, as well as the cities’ complmentary culture and play.

Also this week, Koss Corporation CEO Michael J. Koss started The Sound of Koss. The blog will tell music lovers about what’s happening at Koss and with Koss Stereophones. Michael Koss has some incredible knowledge of — and experience with — audio technology, which give this blog great potential.

I suspect we’ll be reading some interesting things in both blogs — check them out.

On that day a quarter century ago, Steve Jobs stood in front of a crowd of early Apple faithful and literally let the Mac out of the bag. Macintosh Model M0001 may look nostalgic by today’s standards, but in 1984 it was the most polished, most powerful, most user-friendly, best looking and among the lightest computers on the planet. (Hmmm. Sounds like the 2009 Macs ...)

As my friends and family know, I’ve been a strong Apple supporter since even before the Mac was introduced, so Mac’s 25th is an ideal excuse to wax poetic about my many Apple memories. Read the rest of this entry »

Another omen for newspapers

January 20th, 2009 by Kevin A. Barnes

Google announced today that it is ending it’s Print Ads program which packaged and sold advertising space in over 800 U.S. newspapers. Apparently the program, which started in 2006, hasn’t lived up to expectations for generating revenue. Read the rest of this entry »

Smokey the Bear on Wall Street

September 23rd, 2008 by Kevin A. Barnes

Thanks to the recent financial crises in the mortgage industry and investment banking, Americans are now being treated to a high volume screaming match over how much the US government should regulate Wall Street, and what role the government should play in the bailout of companies and individuals hit by the current financial firestorm. As I listen and the dull pain in my head grows, I keep asking why the US government repeatedly believes it can predict — and hence manage — complex chaotic systems. Why does Smokey the Bear suddenly think he can put out the fires in our economy?
